Indian cities are not lagging behind. Cities like Hyderabad and Bangalore which lack efficient local rail transport systems have high transport costs. Families spend nearly 20% of their income on transport. We never lag behind in aping the U.S.
Metros are being built in India, at high Incremental Capital Output Ratio. Their economic viability is made to depend more on rental income from commercial complexes or sale of commercial space adjunct to the Metros, rather than on ticket sales and traffic.
I am trying to write something which provokes thought and action. I appeal to you to discuss the issues raised by me with your friends and come up with your comments.
