India amply deserves this top rank. It is not clear why India didn't get it?
Indian men have lost all the five hockey matches they played at the London Olympics 2012. The team is probably going to be fired by everybody and when it returns to India, it may have to escape some stone-throwing. The team may have to be saved from attacking mobs.
Anyway, I am not going to be a critic of the Indian Hockey Team. Nobody goes to an international Competition for site-seeing or fun. The team might have had all the serious intent to fight and win. It could not unfortunately perform. No team will willingly throw away matches.
Those who comment from outside may not know the astro-turf realities. The easy-chair critics may not know how the synthetic turf hurts the players who were accustomed to some clay uneven grounds. Even if there are some courts/stadia in India which have astro turfs or synthetic turfs, they may not be available to the players everyday. For acclimatisation, practising everyday is very important. For practical reasons of poverty and lack of basic facilities for hockey development of international standards, I cannot blame the Indian hockey team.
However, there may be some politics in selecting the Indian hockey team. But corruption and politics are not new to Indian hockey or Indian sports or Indian Nation. Gill or no Gill, Aswani kumar or no Aswani kumar, Mukhesh or no Mukhesh, they will continue. Nothing is going to change in the short run.
Indians are more enamoured with cricket. Film and sport Stars become the members of the Upper House.
This is a Nation which has the hips of its citizens and rulers stitched to the couches before TV screens.
